CERS5

Description

The CERS5 (ceramide synthase 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

Ceramide synthase 5 (CerS5) is an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a fatty acid chain from acyl-CoA to a sphingoid base. CerS5 exhibits a strong preference for palmitoyl-CoA (C16:0-CoA) as the acyl donor. While it can utilize other acyl donors, its efficiency is lower. CerS5 participates in both the de novo synthesis and salvage pathways of ceramide production, where it N-acylates sphinganine and sphingosine bases to generate dihydroceramides and ceramides, respectively. CerS5 plays a role in de novo ceramide synthesis and surfactant homeostasis in lung epithelial cells.

CERS5 is also known as LASS5, Trh4.
