CDKN2C

Description

The CDKN2C (cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor 2C) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

The CDKN2C gene encodes a protein that is a member of the INK4 family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors. This protein interacts with CDK4 or CDK6, preventing their activation and acting as a cell growth regulator that controls cell cycle G1 progression. Ectopic expression of CDKN2C suppresses human cell growth, correlating with the presence of a wild-type RB1 function. Studies in knockout mice suggest roles for CDKN2C in regulating spermatogenesis and suppressing tumorigenesis. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants of CDKN2C, which encode an identical protein, have been reported.

CDKN2C is also known as INK4C, p18, p18-INK4C.
