CDH13

Description

The CDH13 (cadherin 13) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.

CDH13, also known as T-cadherin, is a unique cadherin protein that lacks the typical transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains found in other cadherins. It's anchored to the cell membrane via a GPI anchor. While classical cadherins are essential for cell-to-cell adhesion and signaling, CDH13 does not directly participate in these processes. Instead, it influences cell behavior by mimicking the effects of LDL (low-density lipoprotein), leading to increased calcium mobilization, enhanced cell migration, and changes in cell characteristics. The specific signaling partners and adaptor proteins involved with CDH13 are still being investigated. While CDH13 can facilitate weak adhesion in vitro, its lack of an intracellular domain suggests it doesn't contribute to stable cell-to-cell interactions. In vivo, CDH13 has been found on the apical surface of chick intestinal epithelial cells, suggesting a potential role in cell organization within tissues.

CDH13 is also known as CDHH, P105.
