CDC26
Description
The CDC26 (cell division cycle 26) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.
CDC26 is a protein encoded by the CDC26 gene in humans. It is highly similar to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Cdc26 protein, a component of the cell cycle anaphase-promoting complex (APC). The APC is a conserved complex that acts as a cell cycle-regulated ubiquitin-protein ligase, responsible for the degradation of various proteins during the cell cycle.
CDC26 is a component of the anaphase promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C), a cell cycle-regulated E3 ubiquitin ligase that controls progression through mitosis and the G1 phase of the cell cycle. The APC/C complex acts by mediating ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of target proteins, primarily by forming 'Lys-11'-linked polyubiquitin chains, and to a lesser extent, 'Lys-48'- and 'Lys-63'-linked polyubiquitin chains. CDC26 may also recruit E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes to the complex.
