CCNB1
Description
The CCNB1 (cyclin B1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.
Cyclin B1 is a protein essential for cell division. It combines with another protein, p34 (Cdk1), to form maturation-promoting factor (MPF), which triggers the transition into mitosis. CCNB1 is produced in two forms: a constant one and a cell cycle-specific one that appears during the G2/M phase. CCNB1 ensures that the cell fully commits to division and plays a key role in early mitotic events like chromosome condensing, nuclear envelope breakdown, and spindle pole assembly. Once activated, CCNB1-Cdk1 modifies other proteins to prepare the cell for division.
CCNB1 is essential for controlling the cell cycle at the G2/M transition, the point where the cell prepares to divide. This function has been experimentally demonstrated in multiple studies.
