Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), also known as tetrachloromethane, is a colorless, non-flammable liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor. It is a chlorinated hydrocarbon compound, meaning it contains only carbon and chlorine atoms.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the median blood concentration of CCl4 in the U.S. general population is 0.2 μg/L. However, occupational exposure to CCl4 can result in much higher blood concentrations, with levels ranging from 10 to 200 μg/L in exposed workers.
