CCL23
Description
The CCL23 (C-C motif chemokine ligand 23) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.
CCL23, a small cytokine belonging to the CC chemokine family, is also known as Macrophage inflammatory protein 3 (MIP-3) and Myeloid progenitor inhibitory factor 1 (MPIF-1). It is predominantly expressed in lung and liver tissue, but also found in bone marrow and placenta. CCL23 is highly chemotactic for resting T cells and monocytes and slightly chemotactic for neutrophils. It has also been attributed to an inhibitory activity on hematopoietic progenitor cells. The gene for CCL23 is located on human chromosome 17 in a locus containing several other CC chemokines. CCL23 is a ligand for the chemokine receptor CCR1.
CCL23 exhibits chemotactic activity towards monocytes, resting T lymphocytes, and neutrophils, but not activated lymphocytes. It also inhibits the proliferation of myeloid progenitor cells in colony formation assays. CCL23 can bind heparin and interact with the chemokine receptor CCR1. Interestingly, truncated forms of CCL23, specifically CCL23(19-99), CCL23(22-99), CCL23(27-99), and CCL23(30-99), demonstrate more potent chemoattractant properties compared to the full-length CCL23.
