CACNG5

Description

The CACNG5 (calcium voltage-gated channel auxiliary subunit gamma 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

CACNG5 plays a crucial role in regulating the activity of AMPA-type glutamate receptors (AMPARs), which are essential for synaptic transmission in the brain. It fine-tunes the gating properties of AMPARs by speeding up their activation, deactivation, and desensitization processes. This regulation is highly specific, as CACNG5 preferentially interacts with certain AMPAR subunits, including GRIA1, GRIA4, and the long isoform of GRIA2. Interestingly, CACNG5 is thought to stabilize the calcium channel in a closed state, contributing to the overall control of calcium influx.
