CACNG1, also known as Voltage-dependent calcium channel gamma-1 subunit, is a protein encoded by the CACNG1 gene in humans. It is a crucial component of the L-type calcium channels, which are composed of five subunits. CACNG1 is part of the gamma subunit family, specifically involved in skeletal muscle 1,4-dihydropyridine-sensitive calcium channels. As an integral membrane protein, it plays a vital role in excitation-contraction coupling. CACNG1 belongs to the neuronal calcium channel gamma subunit gene subfamily, part of the PMP-22/EMP/MP20 family. It is located in a cluster with two similar gamma subunit-encoding genes.
CACNG1 plays a regulatory role in voltage-gated calcium channels, specifically contributing to the generation of L-type calcium currents within skeletal muscle. It influences the rate at which the channel closes (inactivation kinetics).
