C3
Description
The C3 gene encodes complement component 3 (C3), a central protein in the complement system, a crucial part of the immune system that helps fight infections and clear cellular debris. C3 is a highly versatile protein involved in both the classical and alternative pathways of complement activation. It plays a key role in opsonization (marking pathogens for destruction), inflammation, and the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC), which can lyse target cells. C3 deficiency can lead to recurrent infections, while excessive C3 activation can contribute to autoimmune disorders.
Associated Diseases
- C3 deficiency
- C3 glomerulopathy
- Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH)
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
- Other autoimmune disorders
Did you know?
C3 is one of the most abundant proteins in human plasma, making up about 5% of the total protein content.
