C1GALT1

Description

The C1GALT1 (core 1 synthase, glycoprotein-N-acetylgalactosamine 3-beta-galactosyltransferase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

C1GALT1, also known as Core 1 synthase, is an enzyme encoded by the C1GALT1 gene. It produces the core 1 O-glycan structure Gal-beta-1-3GalNAc-R, which is a precursor for various extended mucin-type O-glycans in animal cell surfaces and secreted glycoproteins. C1GALT1 transfers Gal from UDP-Gal to GalNAc-alpha-1-R. This enzyme is linked to the T-Tn antigen system. Some evidence suggests that mutations in the C1GALT1 gene might be associated with kidney disease.

C1GALT1 is also known as C1GALT, T-synthase.
