BPHL

Description

The BPHL (biphenyl hydrolase like) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

BPHL, also known as Valacyclovir hydrolase (VACVase) or Valacyclovirase, is a serine hydrolase that catalyzes the breakdown of specific amino acid ester prodrugs, like valacyclovir and valganciclovir, into their active forms. This enzyme converts valacyclovir into acyclovir, a drug used to treat viral infections. It has a preference for small, hydrophobic, and aromatic amino acid side chains and can work with various leaving groups, particularly those with a primary alcohol. BPHL may also participate in detoxification processes within the body.

BPHL is also known as BPH-RP, MCNAA, VACVASE.
