Description

The BOP1 (BOP1 ribosomal biogenesis factor) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

BOP1 is a nucleolar protein involved in rRNA processing and cell cycle regulation. It is crucial for the maturation of the 25S and 5.8S ribosomal RNAs. The protein contains WD40 repeats and forms part of the Pes1-Bop1 complex, which also includes GRWD1, PES1, ORC6L, and RPL3. This complex plays a role in ribosome biogenesis and chromosome segregation. Overexpression of BOP1 leads to multipolar spindles in human cells, suggesting a potential role in tumourigenesis. The PeBoW complex, composed of BOP1, PES1, and WDR12, is essential for ribosome biogenesis and cell proliferation. BOP1 interacts with PES1 through its N-terminal domain and with WDR12 through its beta-propeller domains. The integrity of this complex is highly sensitive to changes in BOP1 protein levels. The PeBoW complex interacts with DDX27, and BOP1 directly interacts with this protein.

BOP1 is a component of the PeBoW complex, essential for the maturation of 28S and 5.8S ribosomal RNAs and the formation of the 60S ribosome.
