BMP2
Description
The BMP2 (bone morphogenetic protein 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 20.
BMP2 or BMP-2 may refer to:
BMP2 is a growth factor belonging to the TGF-beta superfamily. It plays crucial roles in various developmental processes, including the formation of heart, nerves, and bones. BMP2 induces cartilage and bone formation. It initiates the canonical BMP signaling cascade by interacting with type I receptor BMPR1A and type II receptor BMPR2. Once these receptors bind to BMP2, BMPR2 activates BMPR1A. This leads to phosphorylation of SMAD1/5/8, which then travel to the nucleus and regulate the transcription of target genes. BMP2 also promotes the expression of HAMP through interaction with its receptor BMPR1A/ALK3. In addition to the canonical pathway, BMP2 can signal through non-canonical pathways, such as the ERK/MAP kinase signaling cascade, which regulates osteoblast differentiation. Furthermore, BMP2 stimulates the differentiation of myoblasts into osteoblasts by activating the EIF2AK3-EIF2A-ATF4 pathway, increasing the expression of ATF4, a key factor in osteoblast differentiation. BMP2 acts as a positive regulator of odontoblast differentiation during mesenchymal tooth germ formation. Its expression is suppressed during the bell stage due to MSX1-mediated inhibition of CTNNB1 signaling.
