Ramadan and Covid-19

Covid-19 has turned the world upside down. We have seen a lot of difference in our lives, just in a month’s time. The way we work, the way we move out (or don’t!), how we function – everything has a new normal. Amidst this chaos, we have a blessed visitor, Ramadan Kareem.

As we continue to fast this Ramadan with the same zeal and steadfastness with the Almighty’s Grace, we do miss the usual ‘raunaq’ of the month, due to empty mosques, restricted socialising and deserted markets. This is more difficult especially for our muslim brothers who always look forward to spending more time in the Masjids and the prayer houses in this holy month. Let us understand and remember that this is a testing time and we need to have more patience and continue to do whatever we can and leave the rest to our Creator. Let us follow the advice of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wherein he recommended aspects of quarantine and social distancing in times of disease. (Sahih Bukhari # 5774)

Let us perceive that all the things we are missing this month, due to the Pandemic, have been or can be replaced with things that are equally beautiful. We realize that –

  • The mosques are deserted but our homes have become mosques, what a beautiful sight to behold!
  • This quarantine, we are spending more time with ourselves, our families and also with our Lord. So, we will be more recharged and focussed once we are back at our work stations. Additionally, we can also make use of this time to upgrade ourselves by learning new courses and skills.
  • Having limited food supplies has made us more humble and we understand the state of those who are homeless and foodless. Consume food and keep food stocked in moderation, in Ramadan or otherwise.
  • We have always been encouraged to do charity and help the needy, especially in Ramadan. Now we have an additional reason to do so, as there is a social responsibility. Let’s do more than we usually would, during this testing time.
  • Finally, we have now learnt to wash our hands and practice hygiene. These practices will hopefully remain with us, for life.
  • We must remember this every day – eating clean and healthy, eating clean and healthy, eating clean and healthy!
  • On a lighter note, we are experiencing a historic time and we have a story to tell our grandchildren!

This pandemic is a temporary phase of difficulty which shall pass. But let us see to it that the human spirit does not go missing and we hold it with us forever INTACT. Social distancing is needed but the emotional connection should never go out of reach. Let us keep helping and respecting each other now and always – that’s the spirit even COVID cannot break!
