Hyderabad, India, February 5, 2014: Mapmygenome and KIMS Foundation & Research Center (KFRC) launched Oncomap™ DNA-based test along with cancer genetic counseling services on February 4. Introduced as a World Cancer Day initiative, the event was marked by an introductory presentation and awareness drive. As part of the program, Oncomap™ and genetic counseling are being offered at discounted rates until February 10.

Oncomap™ is a simple DNA-based test that evaluates individuals’ genetic predisposition to over 15 types of cancers and common lifestyle traits. Ms. Anu Acharya, CEO of Mapmygenome, said, “The initiative aims to take Oncomap and genetic counseling closer to people, helping them in understanding the need for early screening in cancer.”

KFRC will provide genetic counseling to help people understand the role of genes in disease pathways and learn about preventive strategies. Dr. (Smt) Kanaka Bhushanam, CEO of KFRC states that genetic evaluation in cancer is the latest facility – only available at KIMS Foundation and Research Center. This is most important to fight cancer in these times of increasing worldwide prevalence of cancer.

Dr. Risha Nahar Lulla, Genetic Counselor and Scientist at KFRC, says, “Genetic counseling for cancers involves assessment of cancer genetic risk in the family members of cancer patients. Predictive genetic testing of hereditary cancers in family members must be followed by genetic counseling to understand the implications of the test report and their lifetime risk of cancer. This in turn will help to develop a customized follow up surveillance plan for early detection and treatment of cancer in these mutation-positive family members.”
