Pooja Ramchandran is a pioneer in the field of genetic counseling in India and VP Genetic Counseling at Mapmygenome. She has been practicing clinical genetic counseling in India since graduating from Johns Hopkins University in 2008. She is a much sought-after expert in a niche profession and, being the first genetic counselor in the country with a formal degree in genetic counseling, she is committed to establishing the genetic counseling profession in India.

She shares her view on the importance of genetic testing for colorectal cancer:

“The most common genetically inherited cancer is Lynch Syndrome, also called Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC). About 1 in 300 individuals with colorectal cancer have it, but only 5% know it. Comprehensive genetic testing is available and can help patients make the most of their family history information. Discussing a family history of cancer with a Genetic Counselor can feel like a scary conversation, but it is crucial towards awareness and prevention.”
