BDKRB1

BDKRB1: An Integral Protein Linked to Neurodevelopment and Disease

Description

BDKRB1, also known as the bradykinin receptor B1, is a protein that plays a critical role in the body's response to various stimuli, particularly in the central nervous system. It belongs to the G protein-coupled receptor family (GPCRs), which are responsible for transmitting signals from outside the cell to the inside.

BDKRB1 is primarily expressed in the brain, especially in areas responsible for cognitive function, memory, and behavior. It binds to bradykinin, a neuropeptide that regulates blood pressure, inflammation, and pain. Upon activation, BDKRB1 initiates intracellular signaling cascades that influence neuronal development, synaptic plasticity, and neurotransmitter release.

Associated Diseases

Dysregulation of BDKRB1 has been implicated in a range of neurological and psychiatric conditions, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Studies have identified mutations in the BDKRB1 gene in individuals with ASD, suggesting a possible link between the protein and autism.
  • Schizophrenia: Reduced levels of BDKRB1 have been observed in the brains of individuals with schizophrenia, pointing to a potential involvement in the pathophysiology of the disorder.
  • Epilepsy: BDKRB1 may contribute to the development of epilepsy in certain cases, as it has been shown to modulate neuronal excitability and susceptibility to seizures.
  • Neurodegenerative Disorders: Preliminary evidence suggests that BDKRB1 may play a role in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, by influencing neuronal survival and synaptic function.

Did you Know ?

A recent study found that approximately 2% of individuals with autism spectrum disorder carry mutations in the BDKRB1 gene, indicating the potential significance of this protein in the etiology of ASD.
