BCL2L12

Description

The BCL2L12 (BCL2 like 12) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

BCL2L12 gene codes for a protein called Bcl-2-like protein 12, which is part of the Bcl-2 family known for its role in regulating apoptosis (programmed cell death). This protein contains a specific domain called BH2. While its exact function remains unknown, BCL2L12 has been linked to resistance against apoptosis, particularly in glioblastoma tumors. It achieves this by interacting with and neutralizing caspase-7 and caspase-3, two key enzymes involved in the execution phase of apoptosis.

The exact function of BCL2L12 is still unknown, but it's known to play a role in regulating apoptosis. It's been observed that BCL2L12 is upregulated in most human glioblastomas, contributing to resistance against apoptosis by directly neutralizing caspase-7 and indirectly neutralizing caspase-3. Both caspase enzymes are crucial in the final stages of programmed cell death.
