BAX


Description

The BAX (BCL2 associated X, apoptosis regulator) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 19.

BAX refers to the human gene BAX, also known as Bcl-2-like protein 4.

BAX plays a crucial role in the mitochondrial apoptotic process. Under normal conditions, it primarily resides in the cytosol, constantly being retrotranslocated from mitochondria to the cytosol by BCL2L1/Bcl-xL, preventing excessive BAX accumulation at the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM). However, in response to stress signals, BAX undergoes a conformational change, translocating to the mitochondrial membrane. This translocation leads to the release of cytochrome c, triggering the apoptotic cascade. BAX also promotes activation of CASP3, further amplifying the apoptotic pathway.

BAX is also known as BCL2L4.
