B4GALT6

Description

The B4GALT6 (beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase 6) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 18.

B4GALT6 catalyzes the synthesis of lactosylceramide (LacCer) by transferring galactose from UDP-galactose to glucosylceramide (GlcCer). LacCer serves as the initial component in the biosynthesis of all gangliosides, a class of membrane-bound glycosphingolipids crucial for various functions in the central nervous system (CNS), including neuronal maturation, axonal formation, and myelination.

B4GALT6 is also known as B4Gal-T6, beta4Gal-T6.
