ATP2A3
Description
The ATP2A3 (ATPase sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ transporting 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.
The ATP2A3 gene encodes Sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase 3 (SERCA3), a key enzyme responsible for calcium transport within cells. SERCA3 is primarily found in the sarcoplasmic or endoplasmic reticula, where it pumps calcium from the cytosol into the lumen of these organelles. This activity plays a crucial role in regulating muscle contraction and excitation. While SERCA3 was initially thought to be exclusive to non-muscle tissues, recent studies have confirmed its presence in cardiomyocytes. Alternative splicing of the ATP2A3 gene results in six different protein isoforms (SERCA3a to SERCA3f). Notably, the ATP2A3 gene has been observed to be downregulated in human papillomavirus-positive neoplastic keratinocytes, suggesting a potential role in tumorigenesis and its use as a prognostic marker for uterine cervical preneoplastic lesions progression.
