Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS)
Description:
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine. It is an autoimmune condition, meaning that the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. AS causes inflammation of the spinal joints (vertebrae) and surrounding tissues, leading to pain, stiffness, and eventually spinal fusion.
Associated Diseases:
AS is often associated with other autoimmune conditions, including:
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Psoriasis
- Uveitis (inflammation of the eye)
- Rheumatoid arthritis

Men are three times more likely to develop AS than women. The average age of onset is between 20 and 40 years old.
