ASGR1

Description

The ASGR1 (asialoglycoprotein receptor 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

The ASGR1 gene encodes a protein that is a subunit of the asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGP-R). This receptor is a transmembrane protein crucial for maintaining serum glycoprotein homeostasis by mediating the endocytosis and lysosomal degradation of glycoproteins with exposed terminal galactose or N-acetylgalactosamine residues. It may play a role in hepatic infection by viruses like hepatitis B and serves as a target for liver-specific drug delivery. The ASGP-R is a hetero-oligomeric protein with major and minor subunits encoded by different genes, with ASGR1 encoding the more abundant major subunit. Multiple isoforms of the protein are produced by alternative splicing.

ASGR1 is also known as ASGPR, ASGPR1, CLEC4H1, HL-1.
