AQP3

Description

The AQP3 (aquaporin 3 (Gill blood group)) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.

Aquaporin-3 (AQP3) is a water channel protein that facilitates the movement of water and glycerol across cell membranes. Its role as a glycerol transporter in the skin is crucial for regulating glycerol levels in the stratum corneum and epidermis, contributing to skin hydration and wound healing. AQP3 is also implicated in tumorigenesis. In the kidney, it enhances water permeability in the medullary collecting duct, allowing water to flow along osmotic gradients. AQP3 exhibits slight permeability to urea and may act as a water and urea exit pathway during antidiuresis in collecting duct cells. It is also thought to play a role in water transport in the gastrointestinal tract and glycerol metabolism.

AQP3 is also known as AQP-3, GIL.
