Description

The APOOL (apolipoprotein O like) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome X.

APOOL, also known as MIC27, is a crucial component of the MICOS complex, a large protein assembly located within the inner membrane of mitochondria. This complex plays a vital role in maintaining the structure of the inner mitochondrial membrane, including the formation of cristae junctions and contact points with the outer membrane. APOOL specifically binds to cardiolipin, a key lipid component of mitochondrial membranes, but does not bind to its precursor, phosphatidylglycerol. This interaction is thought to be crucial for the proper formation of cristae junctions and the overall function of mitochondria.
