APOC1
Description
The APOC1 gene encodes apolipoprotein C-I, a protein that plays a crucial role in lipoprotein metabolism. ApoC-I is a component of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the ‘good‘ cholesterol, and contributes to the transport and metabolism of lipids in the bloodstream. It helps to regulate the activity of lipoprotein lipase, an enzyme responsible for breaking down triglycerides in the blood. Variations in the APOC1 gene have been linked to several health conditions, including cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders.
Associated Diseases
- Cardiovascular disease
- Atherosclerosis
- Hyperlipidemia
- Metabolic syndrome
- Familial lipoprotein lipase deficiency
Did you know?
Elevated levels of ApoC-I are associated with a lower risk of developing heart disease. This is because ApoC-I promotes the removal of cholesterol from the bloodstream.
