APOBEC3D
Description
APOBEC3D (Apolipoprotein B mRNA Editing Enzyme, Catalytic Polypeptide-Like 3D) is a fascinating gene that plays a critical role in our innate immune system. It encodes a protein with cytidine deaminase activity, enabling it to modify DNA and RNA sequences. This activity is crucial for defending against viral infections, especially retroviruses like HIV, by disrupting their replication. However, APOBEC3D‘s activity can also lead to unwanted mutations in our own DNA, contributing to cancer development.
