APOBEC3C

Description

APOBEC3C (Apolipoprotein B mRNA Editing Catalytic Polypeptide 3C) is a gene that encodes a cytidine deaminase enzyme. This enzyme plays a crucial role in innate immunity by targeting and deaminating cytosine bases in the DNA of retroviruses, such as HIV. This process, known as hypermutation, can inhibit viral replication. However, APOBEC3C activity is also linked to the development of certain types of cancer, particularly breast and bladder cancer, by inducing mutations in cellular DNA.
