APOBEC3B

Description

APOBEC3B is a gene that plays a crucial role in the human immune system, primarily by acting as an antiviral defense mechanism. It encodes a cytidine deaminase enzyme that modifies the genetic material of viruses, disrupting their ability to replicate. This defense mechanism is particularly effective against retroviruses, including HIV. However, APOBEC3B‘s activity can also contribute to the development of certain cancers. It has been implicated in the generation of mutations in cancer cells, potentially driving tumor growth.

APOBEC3B‘s antiviral activity against HIV is so potent that the virus has evolved a protein called Vif to specifically target and degrade APOBEC3B.
