APLP2

Description

The APLP2 gene, located on chromosome 19, encodes for the amyloid precursor-like protein 2 (APLP2), a protein closely related to amyloid precursor protein (APP), the primary precursor of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides. APLP2, like APP, undergoes proteolytic processing, generating various fragments, including a soluble extracellular domain and an amyloidogenic fragment. While APLP2 shares structural similarities with APP, its role in Alzheimer‘s disease (AD) remains complex and intriguing. Research suggests that APLP2 might contribute to Aβ production and AD pathology, but its precise function in the disease remains under investigation. APLP2‘s involvement in other neurological disorders, such as Parkinson‘s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is also being explored.
