The ANKRD11 (ankyrin repeat domain containing 11) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.
The ANKRD11 gene produces the ankyrin repeat domain 11 (ANKRD11) protein, which contains multiple ankyrin domains that facilitate protein interactions. ANKRD11 interacts with histone deacetylases, influencing gene activity by controlling when genes are turned on or off. It brings together histone deacetylases and p160 coactivators, regulating their ability to activate gene activity. ANKRD11 might also enhance p53 activity, controlling cell growth, division, and self-destruction. The ANKRD11 protein is found in brain neurons and plays a role in their proliferation and brain development during embryonic development. It is speculated to be involved in neuronal plasticity, important for learning and memory. ANKRD11 may have functions in other cells and is thought to be involved in normal bone development.
ANKRD11 acts as a chromatin regulator, influencing histone acetylation and gene expression, particularly in neural precursor cells. It may recruit histone deacetylases (HDACs) to the p160 coactivators/nuclear receptor complex, hindering ligand-dependent transactivation. ANKRD11 plays a role in the proliferation and development of cortical neural precursors. It may also regulate bone homeostasis.
