Description

The ALOX5 gene encodes 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), a crucial enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes, potent lipid mediators that play a significant role in inflammation, immune responses, and airway hyperresponsiveness. ALOX5 is expressed primarily in immune cells such as neutrophils, eosinophils, and mast cells. When activated, 5-LO catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid into leukotriene A4, which is further metabolized into other leukotrienes. These molecules trigger a cascade of events leading to bronchoconstriction, vascular permeability, and chemotaxis, contributing to various inflammatory conditions.
