ALG1L

Description

ALG1L, also known as UDP-N-acetylglucosamine:dolichyl-phosphate N-acetylglucosaminephosphotransferase, is a crucial enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of dolichol-linked oligosaccharides, which are essential for glycosylation. Glycosylation is a vital post-translational modification that affects protein folding, stability, and function. ALG1L catalyzes the first step in this process, transferring N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) from UDP-GlcNAc to dolichyl phosphate. This reaction initiates the assembly of a complex oligosaccharide structure on the dolichol lipid carrier.

Associated Diseases

Did you know?

Mutations in the ALG1L gene are known to cause a rare and severe type of CDG, known as CDG Type Ia, which can lead to a wide range of developmental and neurological complications.
