AEN

Description

The AEN (apoptosis enhancing nuclease) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

AEN refers to the human gene Apoptosis-enhancing nuclease.

AEN is an exonuclease that can degrade both single- and double-stranded DNA and RNA. It plays a role in p53-mediated apoptosis, a process of programmed cell death. When DNA damage occurs, p53 activates AEN, leading to the digestion of double-stranded DNA into single-stranded DNA. This process amplifies the signals of DNA damage, further promoting apoptosis.

AEN is also known as ISG20L1, pp12744.
