ACP1
Description
The ACP1 gene provides instructions for making the enzyme acid phosphatase 1, a vital component of lysosomes. These cellular compartments act as recycling centers, breaking down waste products and worn-out cell parts. Acid phosphatase 1 plays a critical role in this process by removing phosphate groups from various molecules, facilitating their breakdown. Mutations in the ACP1 gene can disrupt lysosomal function, leading to a buildup of undigested material and potentially causing a range of health problems.
Associated Diseases
- Acid Phosphatase Deficiency (Hypophosphatasia)
- Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bone Disease)
- Rickets
Did you know?
Acid phosphatase 1 activity is found in various bodily fluids, including blood, urine, and semen, and its levels can be used as a diagnostic marker for certain conditions.
