AADAC

Description

The AADAC gene encodes for the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), a crucial component of the alcohol metabolism pathway. ALDH2 catalyzes the second step in alcohol breakdown, converting acetaldehyde to acetate. This enzyme is highly polymorphic, with certain variants resulting in impaired ALDH2 activity. Individuals with these variants exhibit a strong flushing response to alcohol consumption, known as the "Asian flush", and are at increased risk for various health problems related to alcohol intake.
