TPO : thyroid peroxidase

Description

The TPO (thyroid peroxidase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

The TPO gene provides instructions for making thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme crucial for thyroid gland function. This enzyme facilitates the addition of iodine to thyroglobulin, a protein essential for generating thyroid hormones. These hormones regulate growth, brain development, and metabolism. Thyroid peroxidase must reside within the cell membrane of follicular cells to function. It exists in various isoforms, differing in size and location, with some versions being non-functional due to their absence from the cell membrane.

Iodination and coupling of the hormonogenic tyrosines in thyroglobulin to yield the thyroid hormones T(3) and T(4).

TPO is also known as MSA, TDH2A, TPX.
