TGM1 : transglutaminase 1
Description
TGM1, encodes the enzyme transglutaminase 1 (TG1), a key player in various biological processes. It‘s essential for tissue repair, wound healing, and the formation of the skin‘s protective barrier. TG1 acts as a ‘molecular glue‘, crosslinking proteins through a process called transamidation. This process strengthens tissues, stabilizes structures, and plays a crucial role in immune defense. TGM1 expression is tightly regulated, with variations contributing to both normal and pathological conditions.
Associated Diseases
- Celiac Disease: Autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, where TGM1 is targeted by antibodies.
- Dermatitis Herpetiformis: A skin condition characterized by blistering and itching, linked to TGM1 autoimmunity.
- Epidermolysis Bullosa: A group of genetic disorders affecting the skin‘s structural integrity, some forms linked to TGM1 mutations.
- Cancer: TGM1 over-expression has been implicated in tumor growth and metastasis in various cancer types.
