TENT5A

Description

The TENT5A (terminal nucleotidyltransferase 5A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6.

TENT5A is a human gene that encodes the protein FAM46A. This gene has several aliases including HBV X-Transactivated Gene 11 Protein, C6orf37, and XTP11. It spans 6982 base pairs and contains 6 introns. The transcribed mRNA is 2231 base pairs long and has 2 exons, with 4 alternative splice isoforms. TENT5A expression is particularly high in the placenta, pineal gland, and pituitary gland. It shows moderate expression in bone marrow, uterus, and salivary glands. The FAM46A protein is 461 amino acids long. The function of FAM46A is unknown, but a variable number tandem repeat in the first exon has been linked to various retinal diseases and colon cancer in different populations.

TENT5A is a cytoplasmic non-canonical poly(A) RNA polymerase. It adds a single adenosine molecule from ATP to the 3'-OH end of an mRNA poly(A) tail, participating in cytoplasmic polyadenylation (PubMed:33882302). TENT5A polyadenylates mRNAs encoding extracellular matrix components and other genes vital for bone mineralization and osteoblast mineralization. Its primary targets are ER-targeted mRNAs (By similarity).

TENT5A is also known as C6orf37, FAM46A, OI18, XTP11.
