SORD

Description

The SORD gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called sorbitol dehydrogenase. This enzyme plays a critical role in the metabolism of sugars, particularly in the conversion of sorbitol to fructose. Sorbitol dehydrogenase is found in various tissues throughout the body, including the liver, kidneys, and eyes. It's essential for maintaining normal sugar levels and preventing the accumulation of sorbitol, which can be toxic to cells. Mutations in the SORD gene can disrupt this process, leading to a range of health problems.
