SLC19A3 : solute carrier family 19 member 3

Description

The SLC19A3 (solute carrier family 19 member 3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

The SLC19A3 gene provides instructions for making a thiamine transporter protein. This protein moves thiamine (vitamin B1), obtained from the diet, into cells. Thiamine is essential for many cellular functions, including the proper functioning of the nervous system. Thiamine is involved in breaking down sugars and building protein blocks (amino acids) and plays a role in producing neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that relay signals in the nervous system.

SLC19A3 transports thiamine (vitamin B1) into cells using a proton anti-port mechanism, meaning it exchanges thiamine for protons (H+). It does not transport folate, but it does transport pyridoxine (vitamin B6) in a proton-dependent manner.

SLC19A3 is also known as BBGD, THMD2, THTR2, hTHTR2, thTr-2.
