SLC12A1 : solute carrier family 12 member 1

Description

The SLC12A1 (solute carrier family 12 member 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

The SLC12A1 gene provides instructions for making a protein called NKCC2, which is a Na+/K+/2Cl- cotransporter. This means it moves charged atoms (ions) of sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), and chlorine (Cl-) into cells. The NKCC2 protein is essential for normal kidney function. It works with other transport proteins to regulate the movement of ions into and out of kidney cells. Together, these proteins enable the kidneys to reabsorb salt (sodium chloride or NaCl) from the urine back into the bloodstream. This salt retention affects the body's fluid levels and helps maintain blood pressure.

SLC12A1 is also known as BSC, BSC-1, BSC1, CCC2, NKCC2.
