Description
The SIL1 (SIL1 nucleotide exchange factor) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.
The SIL1 gene provides instructions for creating a protein found in the endoplasmic reticulum, a cellular structure responsible for folding and modifying newly formed proteins. SIL1 collaborates with BiP, a protein that assists in shaping new proteins and refolding damaged ones. This process begins with BiP attaching to ATP, a molecule. When BiP folds a protein, ATP converts to ADP. SIL1 then removes ADP from BiP, allowing it to bind to another ATP molecule and restart the protein folding cycle. Due to its role in enabling BiP to exchange ADP for ATP, SIL1 is termed a nucleotide exchange factor.
