SGPL1
Description
The SGPL1 (sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.
SGPL1 is a gene that encodes the enzyme sphingosine-1-phosphate lyase 1 in humans.
SGPL1 cleaves phosphorylated sphingoid bases (PSBs), such as sphingosine-1-phosphate, into fatty aldehydes and phosphoethanolamine. This enzyme is involved in various cellular processes including stress-induced ceramide production and apoptosis (PMID:11018465, PMID:14570870, PMID:24809814, PMID:28165339). It is required for global lipid homeostasis in liver and cholesterol homeostasis in fibroblasts. SGPL1 also plays a role in regulating the pro-inflammatory response and neutrophil trafficking. Through phosphoethanolamine production, it modulates neuronal autophagy, regulating the accumulation of aggregate-prone proteins like APP. SGPL1 is thought to be important for establishing neuronal contact sites and axonal maintenance.
