SGCD : sarcoglycan delta
Description
The SGCD (sarcoglycan delta) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.
The SGCD gene provides instructions for making the delta component (subunit) of the sarcoglycan protein complex, which is located in the membrane surrounding muscle cells. This complex helps maintain muscle structure by attaching to and stabilizing the dystrophin complex, made up of dystrophins and dystroglycans. The large dystrophin complex strengthens muscle fibers and protects them from injury as muscles contract and relax. It acts as an anchor, connecting each muscle cell's structural framework (cytoskeleton) with the lattice of proteins and other molecules outside the cell (extracellular matrix).
SGCD is part of the sarcoglycan complex, a subcomplex within the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex. This complex acts as a bridge between the F-actin cytoskeleton inside muscle cells and the extracellular matrix outside the cells.
