SFTPB : surfactant protein B

Description

The SFTPB (surfactant protein B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

The SFTPB gene provides instructions for producing surfactant protein-B (SP-B), a vital component of surfactant, a mixture of lipids and proteins that lines the lung tissue. Surfactant prevents the collapse of air sacs (alveoli) by lowering surface tension, making breathing easier. SP-B helps spread surfactant across the lung tissue, further reducing surface tension. It is crucial for the formation of lamellar bodies, cellular structures responsible for packaging surfactant components, and influences the processing of another surfactant protein, SP-C.

SFTPB is also known as PSP-B, SFTB3, SFTP3, SMDP1, SP-B.
