SFRP4 : secreted frizzled related protein 4

Description

The SFRP4 (secreted frizzled related protein 4) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

The SFRP4 gene provides instructions for making a protein called secreted frizzled-related protein 4 (SFRP4). This protein inhibits Wnt signaling, which is essential for the development of several tissues and organs. SFRP4's regulation of Wnt signaling is crucial for normal bone development and remodeling, a process where old bone is broken down and new bone is created. SFRP4 also plays a role in the development of fatty (adipose) tissue.

SFRP4 acts as a modulator of Wnt signaling through direct interaction with Wnts. It plays a role in regulating cell growth and differentiation in specific cell types. SFRP4 is involved in bone morphogenesis and may also regulate adult uterine morphology and function. It may increase apoptosis during ovulation through modulation of FZ1/FZ4/WNT4 signaling. SFRP4 exhibits phosphaturic effects by specifically inhibiting sodium-dependent phosphate uptake (PubMed:12952927).

SFRP4 is also known as FRP-4, FRPHE, FRZB-2, PYL, sFRP-4.
