PRRX1

Description

The PRRX1 (paired related homeobox 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

PRRX1 is a protein involved in the development and function of various tissues, particularly those derived from the mesoderm. It acts as a transcription factor, influencing the expression of other genes. Specifically, PRRX1 is essential for the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells, which are precursors for many cell types, including muscle, bone, and cartilage. PRRX1 also plays a role in wound healing by promoting the formation of myofibroblasts, specialized cells that help in tissue repair. The protein also regulates the expression of muscle creatine kinase, an enzyme involved in energy production in muscle cells.

PRRX1 is a master transcription factor that drives the differentiation of stromal fibroblasts into myofibroblasts. It does this by remodeling the super-enhancer landscape, which in turn modulates TGF-beta signaling. This process is essential for wound healing. PRRX1 also plays a critical role in establishing diverse mesodermal muscle types by regulating the expression of muscle creatine kinase (MCK). Furthermore, it may contribute to the maintenance and regeneration of bone, white adipose tissue, and skin.

PRRX1 is also known as AGOTC, PHOX1, PMX1, PRX-1, PRX1.
