PRKAR1A

Description

The PRKAR1A (protein kinase cAMP-dependent type I regulatory subunit alpha) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

The PRKAR1A gene provides instructions for making one subunit of the protein kinase A enzyme. This enzyme is crucial for cell growth and division. Protein kinase A is composed of four subunits, two of which are regulatory, controlling the enzyme's activity. The PRKAR1A gene produces one of these regulatory subunits, called type 1 alpha. When the regulatory subunits are attached to the other two subunits, protein kinase A is inactive. To activate protein kinase A, the regulatory subunits must detach from the enzyme.

PRKAR1A is a regulatory subunit of the cAMP-dependent protein kinases, which are involved in cAMP signaling within cells. This function has been experimentally verified in multiple studies (PubMed:16491121, PubMed:20215566, PubMed:26405036).

PRKAR1A is also known as ACRDYS1, ADOHR, CAR, CNC, CNC1, PKR1, PPNAD1, PRKAR1, Prkar1alpha, TSE1.
